“God is more interested in what you’re becoming than what’s happening to you. He often allows trials, troubles, tribulations, and problems in your life to teach you diligence, determination, and character.” Rick Warren
As we all know I am a fan of quotes and reading plans on YouVersion and this quote from Rick Warren fit perfectly with this blog.
So, a few weeks ago I went with a friend to see a movie about 3 black women who made history in math and science at NASA, called Hidden Figures. It was an amazing movie. I wish that their story had been told sooner. And I know that it was about their brilliant minds and the fact that women, specifically black women played a huge part in getting the USA to space but I can’t get past the fact that I saw myself in Katherine Johnson…
She was a nerd just like me.
She wore glasses just like me.
They were constantly falling off her face she had to push them back in place or scrunch her nose to hold them in place JUST LIKE ME.
I am so sad that their story wasn’t told when I was a kid so I wouldn’t have felt so out of place then and now too sometimes. But I am happy that little girls like my nieces can see women doing great work, so that little girls, like my niece Bailey, who wear glasses can see that there’s nothing wrong with having to fix them a lot and you’re not alone…
After watching this movie, I thought about the fact that a lot of times in life we make the biggest impact when we know what we are doing is big but we don’t know what to do so we let God do what He wants to. And quite frankly it is when we get out of the way that He does his best work. I mean, I am sure that when Katherine Johnson was doing her computing job at NASA feeling like the odd woman out, because she kind of was, she probably didn’t think about the lasting effect that her work would have on the world. She couldn’t have known that her hardships growing up were preparing her for her destiny when she was younger and she could not have known that she was going to be one of the few people in the world to hold the title of human computer. Or perhaps she did. Maybe God told her when she was a child that He would place her somewhere that no one but He could…and she was terrified. But that didn’t mean that she could stop. She had to keep going. God made her brave to do what needed to be done. So when John Glenn told NASA that he was not taking off until she checked the math she just did it and thought about it later. Score one for girls! It’s kind of crazy how big of a part we played in the advancement of our country but still today to be black and a woman feels like a double negative.
Abba I want to be great. I want to make history. I want to inspire someone to try to do something that has never been done before. I know that may be hard but I want to do it. After all I am black and a woman. I mean this dream seems pretty impossible but you are the God of the impossible so if you want me in this path then I’m going to get there because there is nothing too hard for you is there? I feel like I am destined for greatness and I don’t just mean greatness that is earthly I mean that would be awesome but I know you didn’t make me to be mediocre, you made me to be unstoppable. You made me to be brave and bold and a world changer. Even if it’s just one person’s life, but I believe you made me to reach millions. That is a tall task but I believe you made me to do it. I can’t do it alone I know I need your help to do it and honestly Abba I’m tired of running away from the power that is in me. So in Jesus name, I will do what is required in order to receive what has been given to me. I love you Abba.
So as February comes in and our Young Adult Service gets closer I am learning more about myself and I am also learning that I do my best when I let God do the work and I just go along for the ride. Two months into 2017 and the ride has not been easy and I know that whatever is up ahead will be fine as long as I continue to take it one step at a time. So the young adult group in the AME Church is called RAYAC (Richard Allen Young Adult Council) and our branch is called Bethel L.A.B. Leaders Achievers Believers. Our goal is to bring our generation back to God and in turn to the church. We hope to do this by letting God use us to make Him more famous. And this service is only the beginning.
The service is coming together and I can definitely say that I am getting excited! 3 weeks!! #NewGenerationSameGoal
the flyer for our service…it’s awesome right?
