Rediscovering Joy: My Love for Reading

Until last week, it had been about a year since I last posted. I figured a good way to get back into posting weekly is by discussing some of my favorite things.

In this pivoting season, a priority for me has been to rediscover the things that bring me joy. It has been a key part of learning who I am and who I am becoming as a person.

In the next couple of posts, I will share my journey of choosing joy even when it isn’t easy.

Some of the things that bring me joy are:

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Traveling/Adventuring
  4. Sports
  5. Fitness
  6. Being Creative
  7. Fashion
  8. Designing
  9. The Color Pink
  10. Food
  11. My Abba (God)

Christmas, birthdays, or even just because, my perfect gift is books.

Since I was a little girl, I have been a book girly. I read with my Grammy and my mom. I always wanted to share my sister’s books, even if it drove her crazy. I was always reading.

My parents were very intentional about creating space for my siblings and my creativity. We had a library, art spaces, Legos and more. Because of this, each of us to this day enjoys a type of creative outlet. These outlets show up in our respective careers.

For my oldest brother, his musical background has transitioned into acting. For my sister, her love of art has evolved. She uses it in the way she sets up buffets and tabletops as a caterer. For my younger brother, his love of Legos has literally come to life. He builds pallets for a distribution company. For me, reading and writing has always been my thing. It still is.

Rediscovering my love for reading has been so much fun. In the last few years, I read a lot for school but not as much for fun. I have really enjoyed reading books just because they seem like good reads.

I gravitate toward fantasy novels, but I am also interested in memoirs of those I admire. I also enjoy books about topics that intrigue me.

Currently, I am reading about 3 books. I tried reading one book at a time. While I read a lot of books, it was not nearly as much fun. I still need to finish them. That is my goal for the next two weeks. I aim to finish at least one of the books Iโ€™m reading. Two of them are on audio so they should be pretty easy to finish. I can listen while Iโ€™m cleaning and working. The third I have to make intentional time to sit and read but I am looking forward to it.

From Pinterest
  1. Anastasia by Sophie Lark – I chose this book because it has the same name as me. So far, I like it. It seems to be a fantasy retelling of Anastasia the royal had she lived beyond her childhood.
  2. Children of Anguish and Anarchy by Tomi Adeyemi – This is the third book of the Legacy of Orisha series. OH MY DEAR BOB!!, It is soooo good! The first book, Children of Blood and Bone, is also being made into a movie. It looks like it will be pretty great.
  3. Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans – I’m reading this one because I was curious about the topic. It talks about creating a life you love using principles of design. SO far so good.

My challenge for the next two weeks is to finish at least one of these three books. In two weeks, I will update you on my progress and share another thing that brings me joy.

Your challenge is to tell me about a book you love and why you love it so much. If reading isn’t your ministry, then tell me some things that bring you joy. If you are like me, you have not chosen joy in a while. I invite you to join me on this journey. Let’s rediscover joy together. Make sure you tag me in any social media responses on Instagram and Threads @findingstasia. I can’t wait to read your responses.
